New Delhi, July 17 Noting that India has prepared an action plan and set up eight missions to fight climate change, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said the country is willing to do more if there are “credible arrangements” to provide more financial support and technology from developed nations.

Making a statement in Parliament, he said the problem of climate change cannot be addressed by “perpetuating the poverty” of developing countries.

“As a responsible member of the international community, I conveyed to the G-8 and G-5 countries that we recognise our obligation to preserve and protect our environment,” Singh said while apprising both Houses of Parliament about his participation at the Summit meeting of the two groupings in L’Aquila in Italy last week.

He said he had presented at these Summits India’s action plan on climate change and the eight national missions set up in this regard.

Mumbai, July 18 “I am happy to see you all,” US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today told staffers of the Taj and Oberoi hotels who had survived the 26/11 terror attacks and risked their lives to save the guests.

Clinton, who is staying at the Tower Wing of the Taj Hotel to express solidarity with the victims of the Mumbai terror attack on November 26 last, began her day by signing the remembrance book for victims of the terror strike.

Meeting with some staffers of the Taj and Oberoi hotels, Clinton said she was “deeply touched” to meet them.

The terror strikes had left 183 people dead. Among the 22 foreigners killed were five Americans.

The group was led by general manager Karambir Kang, who lost his wife and two sons in the terror strike.(PTI)

The new BMW 1 Series is expected to go on sale in 2011, with the five-door hatch the first model on sale. It will be followed by a three-door, coupe and convertible, while performance M versions and a mini-MPV derivative have also been mooted.

Although the car ran in the much used, swirl-based disguise employed by BMW, it is possible to make out many of the new BWM 1 Series’ new lines.

The design doesn’t appear to have deviated dramatically from the current model, although standout features include a redesigned front end, with the bigger and more upright kidney grilles taking styling cues from the BMW 5 Series GT.

The spy photographer also reported that the test mule is wider and longer than the current car, with reports suggesting that particular attention has been paid to opening up the rear passenger space, which has been criticised on the current model.

There’s no news on what engines will form the line-up, although rumours suggest a series of turbocharged units ranging in size from 1.4-3.0 litres will be used.

The smaller four-cylinder units are likely to be the engines co-developed by BMW and PSA Peugeot Citroen, and already used in the Mini Cooper to improve economy without sacrificing performance.

The next couple of years will be very busy for BMW as it launches a handful of new models including new versions of current top sellers and some models we’ve never seen before. The new X1 falls into the latter category and will take the carmaker into the compact SUV market currently dominated by the likes of the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.

The latest round photos, released as official teasers by BMW, reveal the vehicle in the least amount of camouflage yet, essentially showing off its details but still hiding the overall design. Most notable is the completely undisguised grille, and the sporty new front and rear bumpers. Family traits can also be found in the front and rear lights, which resemble the recently revealed 5-series GT and the 7-series sedan, respectively.

The video clip, as well as previous renderings and spy shots, show that BMW designers have stuck closely to the lines of the Concept X1 showcased at last year’s Paris Motor Show.

The new X1’s running gear is based on the 1-series compact car but its ride height will be taller. The car is actually expected to use a mixture of 1-series and 3-series parts, sort of bridging the size gap between the two – not that the gap was large to begin with. BMW’s X-drive AWD system will also feature.

The range will kick off with two base models: the xDrive18i and the xDrive18d, and these will be followed by an xDrive20d with 177hp (130kW), a 0 – 60mph sprint time of 8.4 seconds and fuel economy of 40mpg (5.8L/100km), as well as an xDrive23d with 204hp (150kW) and a 0 – 60mph sprint time of 7.3 seconds. Topping out the range will be an xDrive28i model.

Production volume is expected to top the 100,000 mark and will start at a BMW plant in Leipzig by the middle of the year. The X1 will be priced higher than the 1-series, likely starting close to the $30,000 mark. Much of the car’s components will also be shared with an upcoming SUV model from Mini to save on development costs, although the BMW model is expected to be significantly larger than the Mini.

Expect to see the X1 unveiled for the first time at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show with sales to follow shortly after.
